Speaking Part 2

IELTS Speaking Part 2: cue card, notes and sample answer

Use your preparation minute to build a route through the topic—not to write a speech.

What happens in Part 2?

You receive a task card, have one minute to prepare, and then speak for up to two minutes. The examiner may ask one or two short questions afterwards; the whole part lasts about 3–4 minutes.

How to use the preparation minute

  1. Choose quickly: select one clear person, place, event or object.
  2. Write keywords: note content words, not complete sentences.
  3. Add a route: beginning, two useful details and a short ending.
  4. Save an example: one small scene or memory makes the answer easier to sustain.

Original cue card example

Practice task—not an official test questionDescribe a place where you like to study.

You should say where it is, when you go there, what the place is like, and explain why you can study well there.

A keyword note map

Library near university → weekday mornings → quiet corner / large windows → phone away → finished difficult assignment → calm and focused

Sample answer

A place where I enjoy studying is a small public library near my university. I usually go there on weekday mornings, when it is quiet and there are plenty of empty desks. My favourite spot is a corner beside a large window because it has natural light but very few distractions.

I started using the library last year when I had a difficult assignment to finish. At home, I kept checking my phone, so I went there and left it in my bag. I managed to work for almost two hours without interruption. Since then, it has become my regular study place.

I think I work well there because the atmosphere is calm and everyone around me is concentrating. That makes it much easier for me to settle down and complete one task at a time.

If you run out of ideas

Move from description to a short memory, compare the place or experience with another one, or explain how you felt and why. Do not repeat the same sentence simply to fill time.

Do not memorise the sample

Borrow the organisation, then replace every detail with your own experience and language.

Practise a long turn

Choose a Part 2 prompt, make a one-minute note map and record one complete attempt.
